Bahia Magdalena
American white pelicans rest along the shore at the northern end of Magdalena Bay. The rich waters of the bay, protected from the Pacific Ocean by a barrier beach, attract great numbers of birds and marine organisms, which come to feed in the gentle waters.
Red mangroves line the shores and provide both roosting and nesting sites for many herons and egrets, while shorebirds forage in the soft sand beneath the branches. These mangroves create an abrupt transition from the sparsely vegetated dunes to the bay rich in life. Each year, they reach farther into the bay, inch by inch, as the dunes push in behind them.
But these waters hold more treasures for us. Gray whales! Today we had many wonderful encounters with both single whales and cow/calf pairs. These gentle giants appear to be as curious of us as we are of them. As the months pass, the young will grow in these waters and prepare for their journey north to Alaska.
