Bahia Magdalena

Our last full day in Magdalena Bay....this wonderful place where the gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) come every year. Bahia Magdalena is one of the four bays and lagoons visited by the whales. These unique places provide protection, warmth, and shallow waters for the new born calves. Babies that are not exactly small, they are about 15 ft. and close to a ton of weight when they are born... just imagine!!!, they put on 2 or 2 ½ lbs. per hour.

This morning most of us decided to go on an early tour searching for whales... it was a beautiful cool and calm morning. The first rays of the sun greeted us, putting a smile on our faces and reminding us how lucky we are to be in this magical part of the world. It sure was an exciting morning....more than ten cow/calves pairs were seen, and the early activities were developing....Mom’s spyhopping, others showing their flukes, babies sticking their heads out of the water.. looking like small floating corks. During the afternoon, the Sea Bird made its way back to San Carlos through the Hall Canal. Another wonderful opportunity to look for birds; herons, egrets, ibis, cormorants, pelicans, long billed curlews, willets...you name it! They were all out there at the low tide!! The day’s activity ended up with a Zodiac cruise through the mangroves, learning and understanding the importance of these fragile habitats.

Time goes by quite fast, but wonderful memories and experiences stay in our minds and hearts for a long time....hoping you are taking back with you many of these........
