Cruising the Sea of Cortez
From the sky to the sea, from the shore through the arroyos and over the hilltops, the diversity and brilliance of the natural world is exemplified in the life that flourishes in Baja. Another spectacular day spent exploring the islands, the peninsula, and the waters in between, brought continued adventures as we made our way south on the Sea of Cortez.
Shortly after the sun crept over the cloudless horizon, a school of common dolphins ushered us along our way towards Isla Monserrate. Once anchored, we landed on to the astonishingly green island for nature walks, leisurely swims, and snorkeling. The crystal blue water, depicted in so many picturesque postcards, played host to an array of fish and marine invertebrates, including the always-scurrying sally light foot crab!
After attempts to anchor near Puerto Gato proved unsuccessful due to the winds, our adventure continued farther to the south, towards the San Jose Channel. During the transit we were treated to a marvelous presentation and interpretation of some of the remarkable photographs of naturalist Sharon Grainger. She wonderfully depicted an array of Baja plant life and provided a fascinating glimpse into the culture and customs of the indigenous Seri people.
Shortly after, and once anchored off of Isla San Jose, we boarded our Zodiacs and took short evening walks though yet another diverse island habitat in the Gulf of California. Our day filled with sea, sand, hillsides, and tide pools culminated in an evening on the shore with a barbeque buffet dinner and a night of stargazing and story telling around a bonfire.
Whether cruising in the Gulf, strolling in the sun, examining the wildlife and fauna, or enjoying the water from the shore, the beauty of Baja abounds. Baja is not for lack of magnificence, splendor, and amazement. The ability of this incredible landscape, jutting up from the warm productive waters of the Gulf, to perpetually inspire our imagination, respect, and appreciation for the natural world is never-ending.
