Boca de Soledad
Boca de Soledad was full of surprises today! This opening to the Pacific Ocean is located at the northern end of Bahia Magdalena and is one of several important calving areas for the gray whale. What a privilege it was to be at anchor all day in this fabulous gray whale nursery. We quickly discovered that some of the best views of the whales were from our Zodiacs. As we ventured out into the open water there were so many whales we didn’t know where to look! We found ourselves right in the middle of the action and surrounded by these magnificent creatures. What a surprise it was to see these gentle giants emerge in a spyhop or breach, or better yet, surface right next to the Zodiac with an explosive exhalation while we were all looking the other way! Our day was filled with flukes and fins and frolicking calves as they rolled off their mothers’ backs. As we gazed into their eyes, the calm peaceful waters were a perfect setting for feeling connected to these graceful mammals. Just when we thought whale watching was the best it could be, a calf would approach our Zodiac and, to our delight, swim right under us, closely followed by its mother. The whales were so plentiful that we had to zig-zag our way around them as we made our way back to the Sea Bird. This perfect day ended with an uplifting spyhop right next to our Zodiac, followed by a fabulous fiesta hosted by our friends from Puerto Lopez Mateos, who provided us with a delicious dinner, live music, singing and dancing.
