Gorda Banks and Flying Humpbacks

We sauntered over to sand dollars, on an island named Magdalena
While others somersaulted in white sand dunes, did he do a triple-gainer?

Itchy, friendly gray whales beckoned us, to the green waters of San Ignacio Lagoon
We laughed, eagerly scratched and photographed, until it was time to go home, too soon!

Which way back to the ship through the fog? It seemed to be anybody’s guess
Except for the driver in the lead panga, the one holding the handy G.P.S.

The gray’s called to us for a second time, and we came more than willing to oblige
We splashed, they rolled and bumped our boats, and then we came to see eye to eye

Requests from the guests proliferate, oh my how the list has grown
From spy-hops to breaches and finally, “If it follows me, can I take it home?”

Blowholes pinched tight after exhaling, an aromatic cetational mist
Secured at ankles by a few of us, Betsey puckered up for her own gray whale kiss!

With high hopes we scanned for cetaceans, we searched the seas all around
Four Vespa quick phalaropes, were the only wildlife to be found.

A well camera-ed ma’am with an experienced hand, caught our upside down whale called Bryde’s
Was it a feeding lunge? Or just for the fun of perplexing or trying to amuse us?

The clouds held a pattern of gift paper, against a crisp, blue morning sky
A most enticing composition for some of us, with discerning photographer eyes.

Competitive males jousted and fought for females, as they bumped, shoved and fell
We found it wasn’t just in Cabo, groups of humpbacks were doing it as well.

And now for the incredible part, that may be hard to believe
Right as we were going to give up, turn around and start to leave

Three breaching humpbacks, a trio! Repeatedly in turn
Leapt from the azure waters, mega calories they did burn.

The “South Breach” diet this was named, by one of our sharp witted guests
As the whales contentedly continued, with their multiple airborne quests.

For nearly a solid two hours, flash cards filled and film was burned
As the diplomatic trio continued, their callisthenic breaching in turn.

The breaches were breathtakingly close by us, and easy to photograph
Even though Jack lamented, he had missed his afternoon nap.

We all left quite exhausted, as the whales splashed into their watery realm
I have only one regret after all of this, to not owning stock in Fuji chrome film.

As you read through these stanza’s and your mouth starts to gape, with an incredulous attitude
Here’s additional fodder for you to contemplate, remember the date, April’s Fool.
