The island is almost pure granite, but all cacti grow exceedingly well here, almost as if by magic! We did different hikes on the island today, admiring the great variety of birds as well as plants. We even found three rattle-less rattlesnakes, this island being its only abode on the planet.
Among the many birds seen today was the loggerhead shrike, a songbird evolved into a predator, feeding off insects, other small songbirds, and probably the only endemic mammal, Slevin’s Deermouse. Other abundant small songbirds were the Ash-throated Flycatcher and the tiny Costa’s Hummingbird.
