Magdalena Bay

As lines of cormorants and pelicans flew from their evening roosts preparing for another day of fishing, we readied ourselves to be among the gray whales. With a flooding tide, we cast off from the Sea Bird in our fleet of Zodiacs. There was a collision of interesting behavior; breeding adults rolling and frothing up the waters, while nearby mother and calf pairs nursed and rested on the surface. In the spirit of Valentines Day, love was in the air or was it in the water?

With a light breeze off the sea and warmth from the sun, we left our anchorage at Boca de Soledad and headed south. Bottlenose dolphins enveloped in emerald green waters escorted the ship as we passed multiple mother and calf pairs and more amorous adults. We enjoyed the afternoon out on deck while frigate birds kept a watchful eye on us from the air.

Late in the day we readied for our passage into the Pacific Ocean at La Entrada. The magic of Baja California Sur, Mexico had already taken hold. What was to come as we sailed for the Gulf of California would coalesce tonight in our collective dreams.
