Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo, Baja Califonia Sur, Mexico
It almost sounds incongruous that being near two large cities bustling with activity (Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo), one can enjoy an afternoon of bird and plant watching as well as snorkeling and seeing so many different birds, plants, and underwater creatures! And during the morning, we had our fill of whale watching, as we were in the area where the male humpback whales from the area of Oregon and British Columbia come to mate and the females come to give birth to their calves! We had ample opportunity to see two and up to three males fight for the females in a bloody (we saw the blood run) battle. Almost two hours were enjoyed as the whales, ignoring our ship almost completely, swam around us in their frenzied rush to be the successful mates!
After lunch and already docked at Cabo San Lucas, we immediately set out in three groups, one to snorkel, the second group to visit the shops in San Jose del Cabo, and the third to bird watch and see plants along a walk paralleling a small river. Ospreys, Great egrets, stilts, different duck species, rails and moorhens were some of the very varied birds to be seen there. Yes, it was a hot afternoon, and as we returned to our bus, we found a small shade in which to rest our weary feet. Of course, at the same time we watched and heard warblers and Gila woodpeckers!
The day couldn’t have been better, except for the visit to the rocks at Land’s End (Finisterra), and yet another incredible sunset here in Baja California.
