Las ballenas amables
Our Pangeros, the local Mexican fishermen and whale guides, say, “Las ballenas son amables.” The verb ‘amar’ means ‘to love.’ Their expression, “The loving whales” is fitting.
We all had opportunities today to be among these great whales. Naturally, words can only approximate what it really feels like to actually have the honor to pet a whale. Anthropomorphically, we could say whales liked to be touched. What else could explain their behavior? If we investigate our own behavior, we like to touch. We hold hands, cuddle, comfort and embrace each other, in pleasure, in love. Somos amables. We are loving. Are the whales indeed ‘loving?’ Well, they sure seem to like it so why not? Whether we actually got to touch them is secondary, just being amongst them touched our soul, and that explains it all.
