Santa Rosalia and Isla San Marcos
This morning we awoke near Isla San Marcos. Another smooth ride across the Gulf of California last night. Today was a fun day-water sports! Those of us who wanted to go snorkeling were first given a safety briefing and then went up to the bridge deck and got our gear; wet suits, mask, snorkel, and flippers. All that was needed was a beautiful locale, and San Marcos was it. The water was brisk but beautiful. Snorkelers spotted exotic species such as bull’s eye electric eels and octopus. Toss in a myriad of fish and the whole event was just plain fun. On shore we took walks up the flower-filled arroyos, or canyons, and marveled at the colourful geological formations. We even spotted the unusual, a Black-chinned Sparrow. To top it all off, kayaking was offered and the exotic coast line was ours to explore.
Did we mention the weather yet? Well, as the rest of North America struggles to identify as to whether spring has actually arrived, we travel under beautiful blue skies and fair winds. The temperature is warm; and when we land at Santa Rosalia, the town is actually hot and welcoming.
Our photographic assignment today is portraits. The small fishing village is full of opportunities, and the people are friendly if not curious as to our antics. The small church in the centre has the notoriety of having been designed by Gustav Eiffel, the very same person who designed the famous tower in Paris, France. This church is, too, made out of metal, bolted and riveted together. The superb lilac-hued amapa tree, a Mexican beauty frames the cupola and steals the day.
