Isla San Marcos & Santa Rosalía
It was still dark, a hint of a new day became evident on the horizon, and we were all out on deck looking at a humpback whale repeatedly raising its flukes. As we waited patiently for the next blow, the leviathan launched itself from the depths into the air, a spectacular breach, which will not be forgotten. Later, we made our way to Isla San Marcos, where we explored its shores with our Zodiacs. Ospreys on their nests, California sea lions and bottlenose dolphins were seen surrounded by the majestic landscapes of the Sonoran desert. The chance to explore the underwater realm was also available for the more adventurous. Marine life thrives on this productive area of the gulf, and a refreshing dip revealed this to our eyes.
As we left Isla San Marcos behind, heading to Isla Tortuga, a mother and calf pair of blue whales was spotted. Once again, a great view of these unusual giants. The mother showed its flukes several times, giving us amazing photo opportunities. A few minutes later, as we headed to Santa Rosalía, a group of approximately six hundred long beaked common dolphins crossed our way. These amazing animals inspire happiness and joy to everyone. In what seemed to be a frantic feeding gathering, their breaths and splashes could be heard all around us, the energy of these remarkable animals is in fact contagious.
The Sea Bird docked in the port of Santa Rosalía, a town that was founded by French mining companies, and that today is an out of the ordinary fishing town. We walked through the streets, visited the church designed by Gustav Eiffel, took a bird watching walk and ended the day enjoying drinks and snacks.
