Our streak of good weather continued today on our way south along the coast of Alaska and into British Columbia. Lack of wind and favorable currents put us slightly ahead of schedule, so we decided to deviate from the main route of the Inside Passage. Our goal was to explore a section of the coastal waterways called Fjordlands, a provincial Marine Park.
Shortly after breakfast we discovered a remote bay at the extreme far end of Mussel Bay where a huge waterfall cascaded all the way down to the sea. The low tide exposed enough of the shore that we decided to launch the Zodiacs and kayaks to explore the area more closely from sea level. Before we had even ventured off the Sea Bird, a group of Dall's porpoises came in close to the ship to investigate our activities. We all marveled from the deck while these graceful black and white animals literally swam circles around the ship.
Our investigations by sea took us directly to the waterfall. One by one, each kayak and Zodiac made a close approach to feel the cool spray. We took turns photographing each other. Not to be outdone, Captain Graves brought the Sea Bird in for a close look as well. Energized by the ions, we all returned to the ship beaming with big grins. Time for lunch.
