The Columbia River Gorge
Inspiration comes easily in a land of snow capped peaks, verdant forests, cascading waterfalls, and brilliant wildflowers.
The area of The Dalles and Hood River, Oregon is filled with projects that came as a result of inspired individuals formulating a vision for the future and evolved into communities setting goals for preservation to share this natural splendor. The larger projects were immediately apparent, such as Sam Hill’s inspiration to share the magnificence of the Columbia River Gorge with his project of a road going “from no place to no where.” We enjoyed the vistas today which he and his engineer Samuel Lancaster gazed upon nearly a century ago.
The lesser apparent projects of pride were pointed out to us as we traveled the roadway back to the Sea Bird. Roadside pull-outs had been leveled and planted with native wildflowers, blooming in brilliant purples, yellows and oranges. Someone’s forethought and inspiration is now shared by thousands of people everyday.
Whether further inspiration materializes from an added splash of color along the roadside, a sweeping vista from a winding roadway perched high on a basaltic rim, or a tiny butterfly seeking a nectar reward, inspiration has value, and we reaped the benefits of inspired forethought today.
