Columbia River Gorge and Hood River, Oregon
In October of 1805 the Corps of Discovery found the area around the Columbia River Gorge to be quite uncomfortable. The late days of fall remained hot. Beset by fleas, members of the party scratched and itched in misery. The fleas, noted Clark, were “very troublesom and dificuelt to get rid of.” The explorers thus stripped off their leather shirts and breeches and proceeded walking stark “neckid” to rid themselves of the unwanted companions.
L-ocking, waiting at The Dalles Dam, completed in 1957.
