Palouse River

From early in the morning on the Palouse River, knee-deep in wildflowers, to the end of the afternoon at sunset on the Columbia River, we have had a busy day!

Dawn found the Sea Bird cruising into the mouth of the Palouse River and dropping anchor. Staff and guests began a dance of various activities choreographed to give everyone a sample of a magnificent place. Zodiacs took some of us to shore to meet a waiting motor coach, where we departed for Palouse Falls.

When we arrived there, yesterday’s rainfall was still beading up on the Balsamroot. The falls itself was roaring in the background, and western kingbirds were scolding overhead.

Meanwhile another contingent of guests were traveling upriver in Zodiacs, to watch ducks, hawks, and swallows in the quiet reaches. The third group was boarding kayaks for an invigorating paddle to secret places where beaver and river otters live.

At a pre-arranged time people from each activity changed places, so that they could see what the others had experienced.

We all returned to the Sea Bird for a mid-day barbecue, and lifted anchor to continue down the Snake River. Two lock passages, a Lewis and Clark presentation, cocktails, dinner, a program on the Plateau Tribes, and a glorious sunset, had us feeling the day had been full of excitement.
