At Sea
Magnificent sailing today in the open waters of the Baltic Sea between Visby on the island of Gotland and Christiansø, the tiny island community off the coast of Bornholm, our next port of call. With a steady breeze rising to a fair wind, we were making some 10.5 knots under sail by the end of the afternoon. With clear blue skies - and ice cream for tea - it was by common consent a perfect day. The evening continued in relaxed mood with a pirate's barbeque on deck, several guests rising to the occasion and dressing the part.
We have experienced sailing to the full on this voyage. Back in the English Channel we were fog-bound and we have experienced periods of windlessness. This is the magic of real sailing. When the Pommern returned from its voyage of circumnavigation with a cargo of winter wheat for England in 1937, it was re-directed from Falmouth to Belfast. What should have been just another day's sailing took the Pommern ten days as she languished in thick fog in the Celtic Sea! It has been a rare privilege to relive the days of the age of sail on board Sea Cloud II.
