Anguilla & Sailing at Sea

Our final day of this voyage amongst the Lesser Antilles was spent enjoying the best of both worlds of this region. After breakfast, we went ashore on a postcard perfect white sand beach of the British dependent territory of Anguilla. We set up base camp outside a small restaurant and some of us set off to explore the beach area and adjacent salt ponds. Cassiopeias, or upside down jellyfish, were gently pulsating in the shallow lagoon. Crabs skittered by, and a few shorebirds fed on the edges. Probably most enjoyable was simply strolling along the beach and searching for whatever had washed up on shore.

Hours were also spent simply relaxing on the fine, white coralline sand. Gentle waves lapped at the shore, and a dip in the water was relaxing. A few boobies and terns fished in the shallows, but mostly we relaxed and reflected on our voyage.

In the afternoon, we returned to the vessel and set sail for our final port of Antigua.

Smoothly sailing along with the breeze was a fitting end on this magnificent sailing ship. A few dolphins came in to play by surfing on the bow, while a solitary frigatebird soared overhead. Just before sunset the crew went up the masts one last time to furl the sails and bring to a close to our sailing expedition.
