At Sea

During the previous night Sea Cloud II had left Antigua and headed out across the Caribbean Sea. This morning, squall clouds scudded along behind us, but ahead the horizon was clear except for a thin sand bar atop which was a platform of steel. This is a Venezuelan naval outpost manned by some 14 personnel laying claim to the islet as an inhabited island so that Venezuela can claim a 200 mile territorial zone across the eastern Caribbean basin. This was discussed by Lennox Honychurch as he introduced us to the geography of the Caribbean during the morning. The thrill of seeing sails set was already behind us as we got accustomed to the beauty of the ship with the wind behind it and the sails full. We had the joy of simply unwinding as the day wore on. Listening to Peter’s music at teatime and watching the setting sun turn the sky orange just before cocktail hour and the stars came out.
