At Sea

Under sunny skies and with brisk airs - that is, in near perfect sailing conditions - we weighed anchor at the start of breakfast to set sail from Bequia through the scenic Grenadines. In the course of a morning under full sail we passed the islands of Mustique and Canouan to our port side, followed by the island of Mayreau.

During a mid-morning "Lex Forum" on “What Future for the Caribbean?" hosted by our Historian, we approached the pointed hills of Union Island. This was our destination for the final beach stop of the voyage at Chatham Bay, an opportunity for swimming, snorkeling and limin' after lunch in what was generally judged to be the warmest water of the voyage. Rum punch was, inevitably, available at the ominous-sounding Shark Attack Beach Bar.

In the late afternoon, we departed in the direction of Barbados, any thoughts of packing for departure postponed by the prospect of an ice cream sundae tea on the Lido Deck. After sundown we were again gathered on the Lido Deck for a cocktail party hosted by Captain Christian Pfenninger who spoke eloquently of what had by common consent been a thoroughly enjoyable voyage. If for many, the ship had been the main destination, it had exceeded expectations. But so too had the contrasting destinations of an itinerary that had introduced us in an unforgettable manner to a Caribbean experience that eludes the larger cruise ships.
