A cruise along the shores of Glacier Bay in Southeast Alaska can be full of surprises. First we came upon a black bear (Ursus americanus) foraging for food in the intertidal zone. At Gloomy Knob, mountain goats and the hunting antics of a peregrine falcon dive-bombing a nesting colony of black-legged kittiwakes commanded our attention. People gasped and heads swiveled as the falcon sped across our bow unexpectedly. Figuring that all that remained to be seen were the famous glaciers at the end of the West Arm of the bay, imagine our surprise and delight when a family of brown bears (Ursus arctos) appeared. The mother walked steadily along the shore while her two cubs trailed behind. Our delight suddenly increased when one cub commenced chasing its sibling with a burst of playful energy. They raced in and out of the dense brush, back and forth along the beach, and subsequently engaged in an exuberant wrestling match.
