Williams Cove and Tracy Arm
We awoke this morning to calm winds and crystal blue skies. Just after breakfast Sea Lion anchored in Williams Cove and the options this morning were hiking, kayaking, and Zodiac cruising. The kayakers paddled up to a waterfall in the cove and white-winged and surf scoters flew just overhead. The hikers found bear tracks and scat along the shore and saw areas where bears had been feeding. Luckily, no bears were sighted as we walked through the woods and along the shoreline.
After lunch Sea Lion headed up Tracy Arm, a beautiful, narrow, twenty-two mile long fjord. Just as we entered the fjord we spotted a black bear feeding along the waterline. The scenery was spectacular as there were numerous waterfalls tumbling down the steep sides of the fjord. The captain took us so close to “hole in the wall waterfall” that water dropped down on the bow. Several adventurous souls gathered on the bow for an icy shower. As we continued up the fjord, icebergs became more numerous and after several bends we finally caught sight of South Sawyer Glacier. There were numerous harbor seals resting on the icebergs near the glacier. Harbor seals gather on the ice in May and June for their puping season, however we saw only adult seals as the pups will be born closer to the first of June. As we got closer to the glacier the ice towered above us and we watched in hopes that we would see the glacier calve. We saw some nice pieces crash into the water and we even saw a piece that calved underwater pop up to the surface. We headed out in the Zodiacs quietly cruising along the glacier and amongst the icebergs. As we came back we got ready for our final recap and cocktail party. Just before dinner Captain Martin reflected on some of the special moments of the cruise and thanked the staff and crew for their help in making this cruise so successful.
