Glacier Bay
Early on a Sunday morn’ we pulled into the Bay,
Seeking bears and icebergs blue and what’ere came our way,
Clouds and rain did fill the sky but we paid no attention,
And sensing our disdain they up and left without a mention.
Marble Island sat there slick and glowing in the light,
Kittiwakes and puffins soared and filled our binos’ sight,
Lions roared from rocky beds then splashed into the sea,
Otters groomed their fluffy heads and floated peacefully.
Back on ship the cameras beeped (some even took a shot!)
Faces smiled and friends conversed and glacier facts were taught,
Someone scanned the shoreline and spotted moving trees,
Two moose (or meese?) ate and did exactly what they pleased.
Russell’s Cut revealed a bear with coat so shiny brown,
It reared up high upon its legs and sniffed its nose around,
It scurried into bushes then lingered in the weeds,
Fed a bit then turned around and sprinted into trees.
Lamplugh glacier shining white and glowing sapphire blue,
Floated there upon the waves and welcomed us into,
A mighty fjord of twisted rock and soaring mountain peaks,
John Hopkins Glacier was the panacea we did seek.
An hour passed and maybe more, we stood in cold and awe,
Our cameras captured memories of what we heard and saw,
We mapped the glacier with our eyes, we stared at frozen towers,
And watched them shatter, crash and fall in glory and in power.
And so it came and so it was – a memory to treasure,
Reminding us that wilderness has value beyond measure.
