Glacier Bay National Park
Could there be a more perfect day than what we spent today in Glacier Bay?
Ranger Richard Becker joined the Sea Lion early in the morning to enlighten the guests with tales of Glacier Bay National Park. He tells us that 200 years ago we would have been walking on ice, and today we travel by vessel 65 miles to ending at the northwest end of Tarr Inlet in front of the Grand Pacific Glacier.
Before breakfast is served, the excitement grew as the words “tufted puffin” were heard, and the Sea Lion approached South Marble Island. Several species of sea birds, such as horned puffins, black-legged kittiwakes, pigeon guillemots, joined the Stellar sea lions in a welcoming chorus. After breakfast, Tidal Inlet hosted a pair of brown bears, Gloomy Knob displayed a great view of mountain goats, Margerie Glacier calved in all her splendor, and the Fairweather Range was a beautiful backdrop for the glorious John’s Hopkins Glacier on this beautiful sunny day. No matter what direction you turned the scenery was simply breathtaking.
As the guests basked in the splendor of the 3.2 million acres that makes up Glacier Bay National Park, the youth onboard took pride in completing the Junior Ranger Program, learning knots from the deck hands and completing the bridge course from Captain Graves.
The journey down bay was highlighted as dusk settled in on the beautiful snow capped mountains. The perfect ending to a perfect day was a beautiful walk at Bartlett Cove on the forest loop trail at Glacier Bay Lodge.
