Los Islotes and Espiritu Santo Island, Baja California Sur, México

When one expects to see something as magnificent as the Green Flash in the morning, and it happens, the day can’t help but start off perfectly. This morning, with a cloudless sky, we appreciated the most wonderful Green Flash, preceded by a one-in-a-thousand purple flash! All of us on the bow of the MV Sea Lion had this opportunity! From this moment on, we set out for the last few miles to Los Islotes (The Islets), where we anchored and following breakfast, enjoyed Zodiac tours around the small islands, watching (and hearing!!) the numerous California Sea Lions at this rookery. Numerous seabirds, such as the magnificent frigate birds, pelicans, yellow-footed gulls, brown- and blue-footed boobies, as well as other less numerous species enhanced our morning. Shortly thereafter we were snorkeling with these animals, especially the young ones, who cavorted and just showed off their incredible capacity of swimming underwater.

Immediately after, we again sailed off towards the southeastern point of Isla Espiritu Santo, where we arrived shortly after lunch. This super long beach was ours for the afternoon, as nobody else was visible, except two sailboats anchored off the island in our vicinity. Here we went kayaking, as well as hiking in the lovely desert, with the incredible views of the La Paz Fault, which cuts this part of the island cleanly. Many interesting plants were seen here, and some were in bloom! After we had all made our way back to the beach, we enjoyed a barbeque dinner there, and an after-dinner star-gazing story about the Greek life of the master of the Greek constellations: Orion.
