An Eclectic Collection of Thoughts and Impressions
When exploring a new destination, the traveler may become so overwhelmed with the new sights, sounds, and discoveries that they literally trip through the landscape; running into things and stubbing their toes as they try to soak up the whole picture. The following is a collection of experiences from our past week as we have tried to absorb the diversity of sights and sounds of Baja California. And like the aforementioned traveler, the following stanzas trip along and stub their toes every now and then. Enjoy.
With lice in her blowhole and barnacles on her back,
An amorous “she” gray whale took hostage our Zodiac.
She rolled on her knuckles and twisted in a frothing fit,
We could see she was female by her mammary and genital slits.
Flukes flew in the air and amongst near misses,
Our naturalists (Clair and Lisa) shouted, “Hey! Look at the fishes!
With whale snot on our cameras and grins upon our faces,
It’s safe to say that Magdalena Bay is one of our favorite places.
Around the peninsula we smoothly sailed,
Scanning blue waters for the fluke of a whale.
We saw breaching and pec slapping from the singers of the seas,
Humpback whales at Gorda Banks, it was the swinging place to be!
A bottle of water, sunscreen and a hat,
Onto the playa with the naturalists, yakity yak.
We roasted our skin as we kept a lookout,
But the Chief Mate Gart, found the first whale spout.
Surrounded we were with sperm whales was the shout,
In a geyser of blows we oohed, ahhed and danced about.
A white arc of beach, Bahia Bonanza,
Is the subject of these final toe-stubbing stanzas.
Kayaking, snorkeling and amongst cacti we walked,
All the while the naturalists continued to talk, talk, talk!
Reluctantly boarding Zodiacs back to the ship,
Baja California, what a magical trip!
