“AGUA VERDE AND PUERTO GATO”
As I always say ….. there is never a dull moment in Baja California, there is always something wonderful going on!
Our day started with a lecture about photography by Ralph Hopkins, the Photo Expedition Leader. His advice will help us get the best shots of Baja California! Either film or digital, it doesn’t matter.
While the lecture was going on in the lounge, our fleet of colorful kayaks were laid out on the beach at “Agua Verde” a nice, protected cove on the Baja California Peninsula, delimitated by beautiful volcanic cliffs covered with green and healthy desert vegetation. The water was so clear that kayakers could see many marine creatures like sea stars, urchins, hard and soft coral and tropical fish. Some of us decided to explore in deeper detail so off we ventured in the sea with our snorkel gear, finding a great abundance of sea life to discover. For those who aren’t into water sports we offered a hike through the desert, finding passion flowers in complete bloom and many species of desert birds like the hooded oriole.
On our way back to the Sea Lion, our senses were awaken by the delicious aroma from the beef and fish BBQ served on deck. By the way… who ate all the chocolate chip cookies?
Suddenly when we thought we had time for a mandatory Siesta, the announcement was made! Humpback whales in front of the ship! Great looks we had of three whales that were traveling together. They showed their flukes so frequently that we were able to name them; freckles, blanca y negra. Many happy photographers were clicking their cameras.
And as a great finale of the day, we landed at Puerto Gato a dramatic cove on the Peninsula, sculptured by red sand stone formations, which are unique to Baja California. Perfect time for photography, light was low and gorgeous and composition couldn’t be better. We all enjoyed a beautiful moonrise behind the red cliffs.
