Anchored in a long and somewhat narrow cove named Ensenada Grande on the southwest side of Isla Partida, my buddy diver and I dropped down to a thirty foot flat, sandy bottom to find ourselves surrounded by a beautiful garden of eels! Garden eels are marvelous animals that burrow their tails in the soft sandy bottom and gracefully sway their delicately thin bodies in the current catching little bits of food from the water column. They are a tad bit difficult to get close to as they quickly retreat in their dens and out of view. This shot of the eel is possibly only 1/10th of its actual length, which can be as long as 65 cm.

As you can see from this picture, garden eels tend to have relatively large eyes and a small upturned mouth.
