Boca De Soledad, Magdalena Bay

We might wander all our lives searching for what eludes us. Many things pass by us each day and we may hardly notice them, but they exist. A tree does make a sound when it falls, no matter if we are present or not, right? For us on the Sea Lion, the deep blue holds such mystery. To make and expedition to Baja is to notice these things and to make sure those standing near us take note. The distance holds us, riveted… a fixed gaze on one point, only to be distracted by another.

Whales are a true mystery. A mammal the size of a bus can appear and disappear in the time it takes for someone to utter the words, “There’s a blow!” It is the in-between times that make up the magic of this journey. We spend time with each other, strangers just days ago, and now we move about like a pod, helping each other to see, to think and to understand our world, or at least this part of it. At home the elusive can be readily dismissed, but here, the elusive is our quarry and our passion. To witness the majesty of marine life all alone is not an option. We share our thoughts at every chance and in turn, listen to our neighbor, our friend, tell the tale of the whale.

In the Boca, we have witnessed the majesty of the gray whale. Today, the youngster of this tribe serves as ambassador. In our case, our patience pays off with a visit and a seemingly knowing eye cast our way. It is as if these animals, see us, recognize us and carry a message for us. We are not so distant, these creatures and humans. Our neighbors. To carry this message forth is our challenge.

It is with great passion we gather throughout each day and relate our experiences. To be here is to allow the notion to be eight years old again, and to show wonder and marvel at every turn…. To be eight again - wouldn’t you, shouldn’t you… if you could?
