a Baja San Jose, Baja California Sur, Mexico

The northernmost limit of the mangroves in the Mexican Pacific is in Baja California. And more specifically, at the island of San Jose. Even before the sun had come up, we were loading our Zodiacs and heading for the entrance to the mangroves of San Jose. And when we were inside, enjoying the lovely fresh morning, we had the opportunity of seeing a green flash, very common occurrence here in Baja California. Many birds, but especially the Mangrove Warbler, as well as a good number of small and large porcupine and balloon fish.

After this adventure, we had breakfast and cruised the Channel of San Jose, renowned for the presence of marine mammals. And, of course, we came upon a good number of Common Dolphins, following and capturing fish at the surface. At a certain moment, they would accelerate with great splashing! Shortly thereafter, we came upon a Bryde’s Whale, also called the tropical whale. This whale is quite shy and disappears easily, never to be seen again. By this time we had arrived at our afternoon destination, Playa Encantada, and began our hikes into the dry arroyo, enjoying the views and the desert plants.
