Gulf of California and Isla Espiritu Santo

There is no such thing as a bad day in the Gulf of California, even though on our way north into the Gulf we faced some strong winds and the swells rocked the boat a little through the night.

The morning found us close to Isla San Francisco, and just when the first sun rays were lighting the sky, three blue whales were spotted. What a fantastic sighting this is, to be able to see the largest animal that has ever lived on Earth. The height of its blow is over 30 feet tall and the sound they make when they surface for a breath is something you always remember. Only occasionally do blue whales show their flukes, but we were lucky this time; one of them kept fluking every time it went down for a deeper dive. It was a perfect opportunity for all of us to take wonderful photos. The flukes of the blue whale can be an amazing 15 feet wide.

After spending some exciting time with these animals we made our way to Isla Espiritu Santo which has a nice bay with a long white sandy beach called “Bahia Bonanza”. The afternoon was perfect for our afternoon activities including hikes, kayaking and snorkeling.

All the crew from the Sea Lion worked hard so they could invite us all for a dinner BBQ on the beach. We had a spectacular view of the Sierra de la Giganta while joyfully moments were shared singing around a bon fire and eating roasted marshmallows, what a perfect way to end another day in Paradise.
