It was just after sunrise today that we awoke to the announcement from Alberto, our expedition leader, that there is a blue whale ahead of the ship. Calm water below us, puffy clouds above - a great way to start a day! This is why we came.
Cruising in San Jose Channel, between San Jose Island and the mountainous coast of the Baja Peninsula, the great whale surfaced time and time again. Captain Graves slowly maneuvered the Sea Lion, keeping pace with this giant marine mammal, the largest animal ever to inhabit the earth. Each blow drew cheers from the crowd assembled on the bow.
The remainder of our last day exploring Baja California was spent beach combing and tide-pooling on San Francisco Island, kayaking the quiet waters of Half Moon Bay, and snorkeling with sea lions at Los Islotes.
As the sun approached the western horizon, the last Zodiac returned to the ship. Back on board, we celebrated our voyage among new friends, and among the great whales – a fitting end to a magical week.
And, as one of our youngsters on board said, “How could this not be one of the best days of my life…” If only every day could be like this. And they are here in Baja…
