Gorda Banks and Cabo San Jose
Do you remember reading the Sunday comic pages of the newspaper and coming across the “Ripley’s Believe it or Not?” column? I do, and I was fascinated with the amazing natural history facts and figures. These were made even more dramatic with the brilliantly colored block-font letters and numerous exclamation points. There might be something as strange as how a farmer grew a 30 pound cantaloupe or perhaps that praying mantids might eat their siblings or their mother may eat them!
We lived a “Ripley’s” column this morning. Before breakfast, the blows of three humpback whales were sighted nearby. As we came closer, this group started a little surface activity. For warm ups, a little pectoral slapping, this is a belly-up stance with the animal lazily flapping and splashing its long fins on the water's surface. The main event came rather abruptly as a whale launched itself airborne from the water. Or perhaps it would be more appropriate to say in true “Ripley”s” style that "This thirty-five ton leviathan can launch its entire hulk clear out of the water and momentarily fly before crashing with a great splash back into the briny sea!"
Such a statement could leave some rather incredulous and scratching their heads in disbelief. But we know better. It has been said, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” We would like to share a few thousand with you now. The font style is cetacean.
These events were inspiring for one of our younger travelers as well. Three hours spent watching whales fling themselves from the water into the air is an awesome experience. Here’s what Kellen thought about it.
