Isla Magdalena / At Sea

The first day of our photo expedition started before sunrise, anchored not far away from Puerto San Carlos, near a majestic set of endless sand dunes called Sand Dollar Beach. As the horizon was lit up by the early morning sun, we had the opportunity to witness the finest moments of a new day. Some immortalized their moments in film or by digital means as others simply took pleasure in being there.

After breakfast we did a second landing and offered interpretive walks through this deserted environment. Animal tracks imprinted on the sand revealed the identity of their sneaky authors. Coyotes, kangaroo rats, Jackrabbits, lizards and even insects adorned the dunes with their feet, an evidence of the diverse life that this place sustains. Desert plants adapted to a highly saline environment delighted us with their capacity of endurance and beauty, as magnificent frigate birds flew over the dunes in search of an easy meal.

The Sea Lion raised the anchor and sailed bound to La Entrada, which is the opening of the bay to the ocean. Here we could see a great variety of sea birds, the old whaling station and the wonderful landscape. As we left La Entrada Behind, we had an encounter with the largest animal species that ever existed on earth; blue whales. At least two of these giants were seen from the bow. We continued making our way north as we wondered what new things the next day would bring for us at San Ignacio Lagoon.
