San Jose Channel and Isla Santa Catalina
Five forty-five (a.m.) when night turns into day,
warming skies, birds, placid water and a few hundred dolphins in our way
The dolphins surround the Sea Lion, there are babies with their mamas
Michelle’s gentle voice says wake-up, come out even in your pajamas!
Up or down, left, right, maybe straight into the airThat’s where the dolphins headed, as well as our bed-head hair!
Dolphins squeaking high pitched whistles, we hear them in the water below,
No, wait that’s Mike rewinding film, getting ready to reload
Heading out we keep time in our pocket, for sights as yet unseen,
these blue whales have us in circles, going where we’ve already been
Distracting splashes, one trick ponies, those are the jumping rays,
Up then down our fluking blue whale, dives another eight minute stay
Blue winkies in the water, Copilia please to you
only males can do this neat trick, a Copepod “How do you do?”
A laughing gull flies by, it’s head cloaked in sinister black
Whoa look! A pair of Cuvier’s Beaked whales, with scared white heads, and chocolate brown backs!
The sightings were incredible, we couldn’t believe our ears
How did we find a beached whale, out where no land was near?
An elephant in the sunset, climbing hills to get it framed
In the dark, avoiding cactus, was this trek a bit insane?
Some stanza’s seem quite silly, could these be things we really have seen?
Are they remnants from yesterday’s motion, perhaps residual scopolamine?
The truth can be stranger than fiction, here at sea cruising on our fine boat
Guests here, they all know better, not a one was an April’s Fool joke!
