The colors of Halfmoon Cay

Blue Suede Shoes, Am I Blue?, Blue Moon, Blue Hawaii, Blue Christmas, what is it with blue? The beauty, the depth and the variety of shades of the color we have named “blue” is represented in every facet the hue has to offer here in the waters surrounding Halfmoon Cay. With our Zodiacs we plied the slalom course of coral reef outcroppings to reach the white sandy fringe of beach. We visited, from our own treetop perch, the protected nesting colony of magnificent frigatebirds and red-footed boobies. A few ever-hopeful male frigatebirds were perched high in the ziricote trees, their brilliant red gular pouches fully inflated and wobbling for a prospective mate. These women were hard to impress, and we didn’t see any takers.

We added to our rainbow of observations with two snorkel outings today. Into the blue waters and a short paddle to the waving corals and scaled denizens that call this paradise home. Our crayon box grew larger with blue chromis blue, rusty squirrelfish reds, and a knock-your-socks off stoplight parrotfish kaleidoscope rainbow. Where do the metaphors and color descriptions separate from the common names of these fish? Do they really need to? It all adds to the enjoyment and sharing of the exploration. A colorful little tidbit found perched on a coral branch is featured in today’s photograph. The name of this little gastropod is nearly as fun as the purple lines edging the orange giraffe spot patterns. It is called “Flamingo Tongue,” and it is the last colorful crayon in our Halfmoon Cay collection today.
