Astoria, Oregon

The sun, clouds, wind, rain, and light were all a part of our day at the western extreme of our trip this week in the wake of Lewis and Clark. We could see the clouds roll in from the west as we gazed overhead into the sun to the east. Our first stop was the amazing Columbia River Maritime Museum. This facility has some of the best exhibits on the west coast concerning the history of the explorers that plied the waterways of the Pacific. Included in the visit was a chance to see the Columbia lightship. This sturdy vessel used to spend long times in the crashing seas of the bar warning ships of the danger they were about to face. We also spent some time at the Astor Column for some great views of the incoming storm that was a topic of discussion during the day. After lunch we repositioned the ship to the small fishing town of Ilwaco, Washington. From there it was a quick ride to the Lewis and Clark Interpretive center at Cape Disappointment. The newly refurbished museum had excellent information about the Corps of Discovery and there time spent on the Washington side of the Columbia River. As we departed Ilwaco, the storm hit. We were in the teeth of a fresh gale and trying to outrun it. We headed east with the storm chasing us all night to Portland.
