Columbia River Gorge

The fall colors of red leaves, green needles, grey skies, and even white hill tops greeted us as we began a day long journey through the famous Columbia River Gorge. This erosional cut through a major mountain range gives a spectacular view of the geology, topography, and botany of the gorge. The Columbia River running through the gorge is the border that separates Washington and Oregon. The skies overhead had recently dropped snow on the hills overlooking the gorge leaving behind an ethereal white powdering. We enjoyed the golden and red leaves that were strewn about and made for a colorful walk along a section of the Historical Columbia River Highway that is now closed to vehicle traffic. Others walked along the small but busy downtown of Hood River to take a look at the extreme sports shops and weather they might try to kite surf or mountain bike the gorge on another visit.
