The east side of the Cascades treated us well with great weather and nice sightings of waterfowl near Umatilla and the rich vineyard agriculture of the Columbia Plateau. We enjoyed two lectures by Andrew Guilliford on Lewis and Clark and then the Nez Pierce Indians. Later in the afternoon we enjoyed a wine and cheese tasting of Washington, Oregon, and California selections. Once we made the turn towards the tri-cities, we passed the rock pinnacles seen in the photo. They are known as the Captains for Lewis & Clark who passed this spot in the fall of 1805 on their way to the Pacific. The cliffs are made up of basalt. This volcanic rock covers most of the eastern portions of Washington and Oregon. There are a couple of climbers on the right pinnacle. Climbing has become very popular along the cliffs of the Columbia and Snake Rivers.
