Portland, Oregon

Bovine art has taken over downtown Portland, Oregon.

Guests boarding Sea Lion for our evening departure reported an epidemic of “designer” cows. The 108 life-sized bovine makeovers, some standing and others lying in downtown parks, plazas, building entrances and lobbies, are here through June.

On guard at the approach to our River Place dock was a man-eating hybrid creature captioned “Sharkow” by its artists. Sea Lion Chief Engineer Ross Wilson grabbed the leg of the Sharkow’s last victim and pulled to no avail.

Kows For Kids is the most dynamic public art and fundraising project held in the City. The goal is to raise $1 million to help children at risk gain a productive and safe life while at the same time having fun for all citizens.

It also provides a way for more people to know the vibrant local community of artists and designers.

Matched with the artists and the 108 fiberglass “naked kows” they received are the same number of corporate, foundation and individual sponsors and design teams.

The artists took the cows into their studios and homes and had free reign over the past six months. Some cows changed shape, some size and all changed color and took on a new personality.

Favorites of guests walking downtown were Milk Dude, Cash Kow, Pied Kow, The Mighty Kowlumbia, Miss Amoorica, Lewis and Clark Cowtographer, Seeking Bovana, Psycowdelic and Riverside Ruminant.

There will be collectible mini-moos and their silent bid auction sponsored by Nordstrom , a corralling of the cows in Pioneer Square and a July 13 gala auction of the entire herd.

Funds raised go to New Avenue for Youth and Trillium Family Services. Their focus is children with serious social, mental and emotional problems.
