Isla Espiritu Santo, Los Islotes

This morning began with a brilliant sunrise over a flat horizon to the east. To the west, the wind was blowing over the Baja Peninsula and into our anchorage at Los Islotes. These small islets are very isolated and open to the elements. As the sun crept higher in the sky, it became evident that Los Islotes was not a possibility, at least not for this morning. We shifted quickly to “Plan B.”

Luckily for us, Baja holds many beautiful options that we can keep in our back pockets. Plan B took us to one of the most beautiful sand beaches in the Gulf of California, Bahía Bonanza. Bonanza is located on the southeastern corner of Espiritu Santo Island. The bay afforded us good protection from the strong westerly winds and we were ashore there shortly after arriving at the anchorage. Many of the guests chose to wander the sand dunes and the white beach stretching off to the north from our landing. Others decided to tidepool to the south, and a few opted to snorkel from the beach. None were disappointed with this lovely spot. The snorkelers found abundant corals; the tidepoolers discovered many critters, and the wanderers enjoyed the pristine nature of this lovely site.

As we returned for lunch, the westerly winds began to drop off so we were off to “Plan C.” We quickly retrieved our beach gear and headed back to Los Islotes. Conditions improved yet even more as we journeyed back to our sunrise location. By the time we got back to these tiny rocky islets, things couldn’t have looked any better. What to do when it’s sunny with flat seas, you do everything! Some of the guests were off to snorkel with the sea lions, others chose to kayak around the island and there were those who chose to cruise these busy islets in a Zodiac.

Everyone returned before sunset in time to enjoy farewell cocktails on the sun deck. As we all watched the sun sink in the west we agreed that it was a fitting end to a grand voyage.
