Isla Santa Catalina
We continued on our kayak voyage with a day of exploring Santa Catalina, one of the most spectacular islands in the Gulf of California. After breakfast, many of us paddled along the west side of the island, as the ship dropped us near Tursiops beach and picked us up near elephant rock. The rest of us followed in Zodiacs. All were treated to marvelous views of the shoreline and some highlights included ospreys, oystercatchers, and of course the diverse cacti. Paddling alone lets one absorb the remoteness and beauty of this oceanic island that has never been attached to the peninsula. Being able to use the Sea Voyager as a “mother ship” and paddle at our own pace certainly was a rewarding way to begin the day.
After a lunch time circumnavigation of the island on the Sea Voyager, we went ashore for snorkeling and natural history walks. The water was toasty warm and crystal clear. Many fish were discovered including nesting sergeant majors, king angels, and giant hawkfish. We then set off for a sunset walk amongst the cardons and giant barrel cacti. The arroyo gave us an opportunity to experience the magic of this island, with lush vegetation and abundant bird life showing us what a special place this really is. Lindblad Expeditions has decided to “adopt” this island and return it to its natural state using our Baja Forever campaign. From our many ways of exploration, it is easy to tell why.
