Los Islotes and Isla Espíritu Santo
Los Islotes, which means “The Islets,” is a set of volcanic rocks that emerge form the ocean near the northern end of Isla Partida. This place is an important California sea lion haul-out, and its guano-covered surface is the evidence of its significance for marine birds. Blue-footed boobies and great blue herons nest here and magnificent frigate birds, yellow-footed gulls and brown boobies find an excellent roosting site.
This morning we explored the shoreline of Los Islotes by Zodiac. We circumnavigated the rocks, and we got closer look to its inhabitants. California sea lions are probably the most charismatic creatures of this place. Not only their mellow faces and chubby appearance are singular, but their diverse range of voices, from tenors to sopranos, gives each of them a unique personality that brought smiles to our faces.
As we left Los Islotes behind, on our way to Bahia Bonanza, we spotted bottlenose dolphins and an elusive blow in the distance, probably a Bryde’s whale. Later on, a good size whale shark surprised us as we saw it from the lounge. A good look to the world’s largest fish was an unusual and exciting experience. Two more Bryde’s whales appeared in front of the ship. This time we had very good looks at them, as good as they can get.
We spent the afternoon in the beautiful beach of Bahia Bonanza. Here we enjoyed the last day of our trip snorkeling and kayaking from shore and exploring the Sonoran desert.
