Sapodilla Lagoon & Cabbage Haul Creek, Belize
We kayaked this afternoon, down the tranquil waters of Cabbage Haul Creek. The morning had been spent hiking in Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Preserve, where although we didn’t see any of the most famous residents, we spotted numerous birds, which included King vultures and trogons. This afternoon was the first time I had the opportunity to get into the kayaks we have been carrying around with us, and slowly make my way along the very quiet waters with my partner-in-paddle. Red, white and black mangroves bordered the waterway, and orchids rose above with incredible displays. At one point we saw the head of a smallish, narrow reptile cross the short distance to the other bank. I expected a lizard, but saw instead the long, long body of a beautiful, but unidentified snake slither up and disappear into the grass. A hawk flew overhead, and turned out to be the first in many people’s life list: an Aplomado falcon. By sunset we were making our way back to the ship by Zodiac, but the quiet river remains within our memories.
