Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
Today, we awoke under a clear and sunny sky. Our morning started early, and after a delicious breakfast, we were ready to get on the Zodiacs. With the expectation of another adventure ahead of us, we started our short drive to the famous Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Preserve leaving the Sea Voyager anchored off the town of Dangriga.
Our trip started by disembarking on the beach, where an air-conditioned minibus was awaiting to drive us through mangrove forest and the black Garífuna community of Dangriga. After a drive down highway and dirt road, we arrived to Cockscomb. We divided the group, one set to explore the rainforest on the waterfall trail, one to take a long, level walk, and the other to reach the beautiful lookout point called Ben’s bluff.
During all our walks we had the opportunity to observe the luxurious vegetation characteristic of tropical rain forest.
Several species of birds were observed: crested guan, great tinamou, red-capped manakin, ocher-bellied flycatcher, and among the many species, the interesting “dance” of the white-collared manakin.
The highlight of the day was the elusive collared peccaries, which were spotted by some lucky people walking back to the park ranger station.
