Golfo Dulce; Casa Orquideas Botanical Garden & Rio Rincón

Our first day in Costa Rica began with the exploration of a botanical garden on the Golfo Dulce area on the south Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The botanical garden called Casa Orquideas is the work of love of Ron and Trudy McAlllister, a couple of ex-patriots from USA who fell in love with the tropical rainforest of Costa Rica. The McAllisters had spent the last twenty three years carving a garden in the middle of the rainforest. Today this beautiful place offers to the visitor a great diversity of plants as well as birds that are attracted to the garden.

Later in the day as the Sea Voyager repositioned to our afternoon destination we enjoyed a lecture on the history of Costa Rica. Our eager naturalist Federico compressed 500 years of history into a 45 minute presentation that explained why Costa Rica is the country it is.

During the afternoon we explored the area of Rio Rincon, where by foot, Zodiac and kayak we went in different directions to find the hidden wonders of the tropical rainforest and mangrove forest. At the end of the day we had quite an impressive collective list of sightings. More than 50 species of birds were seen during the day with some of outstanding beauty as trogons and toucans and some little works of art done by mother nature – the red-legged honeycreeper.
