Osa Peninsula, Rio Agujas & Cano Island
Our second day in Costa Rica and what a day we had! Couldn’t be better! We had beautiful weather, monkeys, toucans, kingfishers, egrets, dolphins, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking… Oh well, a great day indeed.
But let’s start at the beginning. This morning we awoke at anchor off of the Osa Peninsula, one of the most wild and difficult to access regions in Costa Rica. Our anchor point, Drake Bay, is named because this was one of the places that the pirate used as a shelter. It is now the site of one of the largest towns in this region with about a thousand people, including two of our Zodiac drivers. It is surrounded by a green lush tropical forest, just the perfect place for getting in our Zodiacs and exploring. We went up the Agugitas River on a short cruise - it may have been short in distance, but not in wildlife. Just to give you an idea, we got to see a howler monkeys, a troop of white-throated capuchin monkeys, scarlet macaws, chestnut-mandibled toucans, snowy egret, little blue heron, ring kingfisher, one American crocodile and even one of the best looks at a nice male Jesus Christ lizard taking in the sun on top of a branch. As you can see in the picture, it is very well camouflaged for this tropical habitat.
Some of us chose to go sea kayaking and take advantage of the beautiful weather and get to do some nice outdoor exercise.
After that great morning and a fine lunch, we went on a cruise looking for a marine life. We got nice views of pantropical spotted dolphins on our way to Cano Island, where we anchored. This is an excellent spot for snorkeling, swimming, or relaxing on the beach and ending our day with a beautiful sunset view from the sun deck with a nice cocktail in hand.
