Playa Caletas & Corcovado National Park - Osa Peninsula, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

At sunrise we arrived at Caletas Beach, where our day of rainforest adventure started. All the land we could see from the ship was the magnificent rainforest of the Osa Peninsula. We came ashore and some people decided to ride the local horses on the coastal path through beaches and forests.

Another group went on the long walk at the private reserve of Caletas while a third group took a smoother bird watching stroll. Scarlet macaws flew above the canopy in a loud display of color. After one of the seamen climbed a palm and opened the coconut for us, we came back aboard for lunch and repositioning in front of San Pedrillo. At this ranger station of the Corcovado National Park we could see a nesting slaty tail trogon, a strikingly colored seed disperser of our tropical forests. On the two walks we found Central American agoutis, white nosed coatis, mantled howler monkeys and several species of birds. We could listen to the constant melodious calls of the black hooded antshrikes, chestnut backed antbirds and the riverside wrens.

A clear green flash spiced the cocktail hour at sunset and the greater bulldog fishing bats after dinner at the stern closed a wonderful day at the Osa.
