Golfo Dulce, Casa Orquideas & Rio Rincón; Puntarenas

The eastern side of the Osa Peninsula with its pristine vegetation and calmed waters welcomed us today at Golfo Dulce. After a colorful sunrise and an early breakfast we were ready to disembark at Casa Orquideas Botanical Gardens. This seventy–acre property owned by the McAllister family is an authentic genetic bank of tropical plants and colorful flowers. Their collection includes heliconias, gingers, palms, aroids, verbenas and fruiting trees. We explored the gardens with our cameras and binoculars ready to fully enjoy the dynamics between flora and fauna.

The vegetation provides shelter and food supply to a variety of birds that we took pleasure in seeing. Colorful visitors such as tanagers, bananaquits, hummingbirds and even a special sighting of two king vultures, filled our binoculars with vivid images of our feathered species. After this great visit, it was time to cool down. We jumped into the water from the stern of the Sea Voyager, for a refreshing swim in the calmed waters of this deep gulf on southern Costa Rica.

During lunch we repositioned to the area of Rio Rincon. This is the northwesternmost region of Golfo Dulce, which awaited us with another spectacular forest right by the water. This time we discovered this greenery walking, kayaking and on a Zodiac ride. As we finished our outings the sunset filled the sky with orange, red and yellow tones to give us a colorful goodbye to Costa Rica.
