Golfo Dulce, Casa Orquideas & Rincon River

Today we arrived in Costa Rica and after seeing the sun rise and clearing customs at Golfito our voyaging took us into the main part of Golfo Dulce. It is overwhelming being surround by these green mountains full of life in one of the most impressive tropical deep water gulfs in the world. After breakfast we began to land using the Zodiacs to the beach of Casa Orquideas.

Once we where there, walks brought us into this one-of-a-kind tropical garden for Costa Rica. We hiked around the gardens and found in this special place hundreds of plants with many uses. Some of them were blooming or fruiting and providing food for chestnut-mandibled toucans, tanagers, scarlet macaws and dozens of species of birds. Precious sightings that made our lists thicker and our memories richer!

After lunch the palms at the edge of the beach were waiving a goodbye to us while our voyaging was taking us to the inner side of the gulf. Once we were there the tide was favorable to explore the Rincon River and its mangroves. The roots of black mangroves where partially covered by the water and the bird activity rose to a crescendo: slaty trogons, white ibis’ and several other water birds were there observing our crossing. After enjoying refreshments at the local Cantina we decided to return through the main channel. Almost at the end of our experience something very special crowned our visit to this amazing area. While the sunset was on the way and with a clear day over us we managed to see and hear a storm in the distance. A clear reminder of how diverse this environment can be and how life surrounds us.
