Golfo Dulce, Casa Orquideas & Rio Rincon

Welcome to Costa Rica! After leaving a beautiful paradise in the region of Coiba National Park, we entered into a new natural experience. The sunrise over the rainforest of Golfo Dulce with hues of green and orange illuminated our eyes in a day that promised to be full of colors.

After clearing immigration and customs we arrived by mid morning to Casa Orquideas botanical garden. We were all impressed with this labor of love that Ron and Trudy McCallister have built together for many years.

The photography, the birdwatching and the immersion into the flora granted us with special moments: chestnut mandibled toucans finding food in a tropical royal palm, tent-making bats using a shelter underneath a palm leaf, scarlet macaws opening up beach almond fruits for their seeds and even a king vulture soaring against the blue sky. Bromeliads, heliconias, orchids, cacti… hundreds of different plant species living in harmony. Indeed the diversity of plant life in our planet is exceptional.

The sun was warming up all around us, therefore after the visit to the gardens we decided to jump from the stern while we were anchored in Golfo Dulce. But even for our swimmers the view of the forest like a giant movie scene was tinted with the red of the scarlet macaws flying in search for the best food supply.

After lunch we repositioned into River Rincon and the clouds brought us the main blessing to maintain this ecosystem: the rain. Our guests decided that this precipitation will not stop us from discovering this region of Osa Peninsula, therefore with a great spirit and a rain poncho or jacket we went out to look for the secrets that keep the balance of this realm. Once back on board a hot chocolate, a dry towel and a vivid memory of our experience in Golfo Dulce concluded our first day in the rainforest of Costa Rica.
